"THE MAKERS" Biography Featuring "Annie Chung" the creator and brainchild behind "Beth and Olivia Handmade"

Tell us about your path to what you’re doing now; how did you start Beth and Olivia Handmade? What is your background?

Beth and Olivia Handmade was born from a need to find relief for my youngest daughter’s eczema. Nothing in the market that I have found could help her condition, which prompted me to make my own and eventually naming it the Neem and Tea Tree Body Butter.I have always been in the design field with a background of fashion and jewellery. My goal is to combine all my handmade creations one day to form a lifestyle company..

How has your style developed as you’ve grown?

I am a minimalist, and I definitely wanted to express that in what I do. After years of experimenting, my product selection has become much more refined and the branding more cohesive.

Creative blocks come when different ideas happen all at once out of the blue and I can’t decide on what to do. Those are the times when I have to make prototypes of my ideas and lay them out side by side to finalize my decision.

When did the idea of starting your business feel like something you could

achieve? Was there an “aha!” moment?

After lots of trial and error, I was ecstatic when I applied my final concoction of the Neem and Tea Tree Butter on my daughter. Her eczema decreased by 50% overnight and at that point, I knew I had to spread the word to everyone suffering from the same condition. The “aha” moment of my jewellery was when I realized my customers wanted simple pieces they can build on themselves.

Does your process come pretty naturally or do you find yourself fighting against creative block at times?

Most times, coming out with new products and new packaging happen quite naturally. Creative blocks come when different ideas happen all at once out of the blue and I can’t decide on what to do. Those are the times when I have to make prototypes of my ideas and lay them out side by side to finalize my decision.

"A great idea will take off only if you have faith and are willing to work 110% to make it happen."

If you weren’t running Beth and Olivia Handmade, what would you be doing?

I would be catching up on my novels.

What advice would you give to someone who is starting out?

Keep positive and always strive to reach your goal, even during difficult times. Customer service should not just be good, it should be stellar. If you slack off, it shows in your products.

"A great idea will take off only if you have faith and are willing to work 110% to make it happen."
